Ann Deever Analysis
Ann Deever is a strong, sweet and polite young woman. I decided to analyse Ann because she is the one who provokes the actions during the play. This makes her to be the catalystcharacter. Sweetness and steel are the contrasting characteristics of Ann. Her motivation is to get married to Chris. In a way, she is very close to the way I think and that intrigues me. She lookslike a silly girl but in fact, I think she is the smartest one in the bunch.
In Ann’s first appearance, the way she looks may confuse a lot of people. It does not seem that she has something tohide but she has all the information required to make things happen. On the other hand, if she believes in Joe’s innocence, she would not bring Larry’s letter to reveal the truth and persuade mother.In act one; there were not many reactions. She only tries to reach her goal. In fact it almost looks like a relative’s visit.
‘[…] I couldn’t resist. I´m taking it right off before ruin it (swingsaround) […]’
She behaves like the perfect criminal meddling in the Keller family without any suspicion of what she knows in Larry’s letter. She tries to avoid that fact but she has it if her futureplan fails.
In act two her behaviour becomes to change because of George’s arrival. Until the moment she realises he is going to come, she became more anxious and messy. Although she did not doanything wrong, she feels threatened. She began to feel trapped and forced to tell the truth in order to clarify her engagement to Chris and the guiltiness of Joe.
‘[…] I’m not here out of a blue sky,Chris. I turned my back on my father, if there’s anything wrong here and now […]’
She also insinuates that when she says to Sue:
‘[…] People like to do things for the Kellers. Been that way since Ican remember […]’
This makes us know that she is not silly as we thought; she is, actually, taking advantages of her situation.
Further in the play, she has to choose between George and Chris. Love...
