El inventario forestal es un método para medir y registrar los datos, procesar estos datos de campo para obtener así información de la cantidad y cualidad de los árboles y las áreas y características de las áreas boscosas con un grado de detalle y precisión de a cuerdo al objetivo previsto y exactitudrequerida.
Según COTESU. 1991
Es el conteo e identificación de los árboles que se hace para saber que hay, cuanto hay y donde está la madera con la finalidad de organizar posteriormente su extracción.
Según Misterio de Medio Ambiente, Mexico. 2004
El inventario forestal busca conocer la existencia de especies forestales y no forestales que conforman estos bosques así como su distribuciónespacial número de árboles volumen y distribución volumétrica de las mismas. Paralelamente se estudia la fauna, el tipo de suelo, la topografía, hidrografía y otros parámetros como la existencia de un núcleo importante de campesinos que residen dentro del área y en comunidades aledañas, cuya participación en la elaboración y ejecución en los planes de manejo es imprescindible.

I INTRODUCCION
A través del diagnóstico preliminar del sectorforestal y de los levantamientos exploratorios hechos con anterioridad, se procuró orientar el presente inventario en el sentido de identificar el potencial forestal de la región (no solo desde el punto de vista maderero sino también buscando aquellos recursos forestales que podrían ser aprovechados como materia prima para industrias de fibras y partículas de madera para atender el mercadopanameño de estos productos, de acuerdo con la Política de Desarrollo Nacional que busca substituir total o parcialmente la importación de los mismos.
❖ Analizar los resultados de un inventario con fines comerciales, determinando el volumen aprovechable por especie y por hectárea.
