William Henry Gates II. (Bremerton, Washington, USA, November 30, 1925) is a retired U.S. lawyer, philanthropist and author of Showing Up for Life: Thoughts on the Gifts of a Lifetime. He is thefather of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

Gates was born in Bremerton, Washington, son of William Henry Gates I or Mr.(Bremerton, Washington, March 14, 1891 - Bremerton, Washington, August 17, 1969), and his wife (d. 1913) Lillian Elizabeth Rice ( Bremerton, Washington, 1891, Bremerton, Washington, November 27, 1966). Itwas the third in his family to have the same name, his grandfather was the first William Henry Gates. He was a member of a troop of Boy Scouts some years, and earned the Eagle Scout Award in 1941. Afterhigh school, he joined the U.S. Army, changing his name to William Gates, Jr. to maintain the appearance of elitism. He attended the University of Washington (UW) under the GI Bill, where he won a B.A. in 1949 and a law degree in 1950.
