To delegate is to give authority to a person to accomplish specific task/activities. Without delegation, a single person would be doing everything.
The entire process of delegation ofauthority involves the following steps:
1. Define the objectives and tasks. Once the objectives have been defined is time to define what tasks are needed to reach these objectives and delegatethe task, trying not to only delegate the routine tasks, but also the tasks that are more pleasurable, and attracted.
2. Selecting the subordinate. The subordinate has to be selected basedon the capability and qualities to develop the task, keeping in mind to not always delegate to the most competent.
3. Task allocation and power of control. The power needed to perform thetask to be handed in totality to the subordinate, giving clear, precise and direct direction.
4. Demand accountability for achieving the task. A system of control should be established toensuring the completeness of the task, which means you must not abandon the task.
The delegation process is the mechanism through which all Organizations are structured. As organizations growmore people are needed to developed wider function of authority. Despite authority being such an important concept, it holds great paradox due to the concept of responsibility.Responsibility: It is the duty of every individual to make optimal use of the resources over which it has authority, thus are used to meet the desired objectives. The paradox is that authority isessential to be delegated to effectively carry organization’s objectives; however it is impossible to delegate responsibility. This means that when authority is delegated, the authority is given tosomeone to possibly decide on something; however the responsibility that things are done right still remains of the delegator, leading many managers to delegate less authority as possible.
