PUEBLOS INDÍGENAS VENEZOLANOS Y SU RELACIÓN CON EL
AMBIENTE

RESUMEN
La deforestación de los bosques tropicales y losdaños ecológicos por
explotaciones petroleras, mineras y carboníferas en Venezuela, no sólo destruyen
al ambiente natural, sino también son una amenaza para la preservación cultural y
la protección del territorio de los indígenas venezolanos que habitan estas zonas,
los cuales tienen unos conocimientos ancestrales y han logrado mantener una
filosofía de vida de mayor equilibrio con suentorno. Sin embargo, estas
tradiciones ambientales son poco conocidas y apreciadas a pesar de ser tan
amplias como la cantidad de estos pueblos en Latinoamérica. El propósito del
estudio fue realizar una investigación que permitiera mostrar la visión de algunos
pueblos indígenas venezolanos sobre su relación con el ambiente natural, a fin de
promover la reflexión sobre sus valores ambientales , yproponer un modelo para
la promoción de una cultura ambiental sostenible, necesarios para la Educación
Ambiental, para lo cual se proponen lineamientos orientadores, a fin de preservar
la relación cultural y ambiental de los pueblos indígenas venezolanos. Para esto ,
se realizó una recolección exhaustiva en dif erentes fuentes relacionadas con el
tema, para finalizar con un bosquejo de seiscomunidades indígenas venezolanas:
Waraos, Pemones, Yanomami, Wayúu, Bari y Wóthüha , además de plantear
algunos factores esenciales que podrían tener influencia positiva en la toma de
decisiones ambientalistas y el uso responsable de los ecosistemas venezolanos.

ABSTRACT
Theecological damages, caused by the deforestati on of the Venezuelan
Rain Forest, are due to the mining and extracting of coal and oil. This not only
destroys the natural environment, but also threatens the cultural preservation of
the protected Venezuelan indigenous people and the land they inhibit. T hese tribes
possess ancestral knowledge and have managed to maintain a life philosophy of
greaterbalance with their environment. However, these human -environment
traditions are not widely known or appreciated, even though there are as many
traditions as there are tribes in Latin America. The purpose of this study was to
conduct a research which would allow some of these Venezuelan Indian Tribes’
visions and their relationship with the environment to be shown. This research
would thenpromote the study of e nvironmental values and propose a model to

promote a sustainable environmental culture. This is needed for environmental
education and therefore, guidelines are proposed in order topreserve the cultural,
human-environmental relationship of Venezuelan Tri bes. An exhaustive data
collection was done, using several sources related to the subject. The result was a
representation of six Venezuelan indigenous communities: Waraos, Pemones,
Yanomami, Wayúu, Bari and Wóthüha that raised some key factors which may
have a positive influence in environmentalists’ decision makingand responsible
use of the Venezuelan ecosystems.
