Bill Clinton
In 1986 and 1987, Clinton was president of the National Governors Association. In 1991 he presented his candidacy for the Democratic nomination forpresident. Favorite from the beginning, was nominated in July of the following year. With his partner in the bid, Tennessee Senator Al Gore, Clinton was able to defeat in November 1992, theRepublican candidate, President George Bush, presenting a national economic strategy which proposed increasing state investments, reducing the national debt and tax reform.
Just Released the presidentialoffice, the main domestic policy initiative in Clinton, announced in February 1993, was a five-year deal worth 700,000 million dollars to increase funding for education, job training and publicworks , proposed reducing federal spending, especially defense, and advocated an increase in revenue, in part through a tax on energy consumption of broad-based. Early in his term, he appointed hiswife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, to head a special committee of health reform, but their work was limited by the lack of budget and its possible involvement in tax evasion (known as Whitewater matter).
