Ancient greeks, romans and oven Phoenicians had a well developed viticulture; theyknew a lot about the alcoholic fermentation process so they could produce and enjoy wine. There is some evidence that Babylonians and Egyptians also produced cheese sonce 3500 BC – which is anotherfermentation process that has been used till our days to obtain benefits. Special breeding criteria have also been followed by different stockbreeders for centuries in many different places around theworld.
But that do wine, cheese and cattle have to do with biotechnology? Way before this word was invented, these biological processes were used by mankind to take advantage for that nature had tooffer. Even though they might have never known, biotechnology was an essential part of their lives. Now that we know this, it is possible to think about what biotechnology means and comprehends.Biotechnology, from its origins, has always been the scientific utilization of living things (micro-organisms, animals and plants) to obtain products of industrial interest or other types of benefits formankind.
