Every semester the Student Government Association promotes the blood drive on every campus. Some instructors encourage students to donate by having blood drive presentations in class.
Thisis a non-profit event that gets about 50 blood donations per day. Dr. Ron Stroud, United Blood services employee, is looking forward to surpass last year’s goal, which was over 2300 blood donors duringthe 2008-2009 academic year.
“EPCC is the number one blood donor in the region,” said Dr. Stroud “as the name implies EPCC is part of the community and they are always willing to help.”According to Dr. Stroud blood donations are important because on average a single blood donation could save up to 3 lives. Additionally the donor can learn their cholesterol levels, and get adonor card with their blood type, which they can show in an emergency.
In order to donate blood a person must undergo an interview process; a registered nurse will ask basic health questionsregarding personal habits, travel history and other medical questions.
The donation process might take from five to ten minutes, and people might donate up to six times a year, in other wordsevery two months; and at most one platelet; because the human body needs to regenerate the donated blood.
EPCC student, Teresa Mendoza (27) is a majoring in Business Administration decided tobecome a donor because she feels happy to help others and suggests that students should think twice if they have not donated blood yet, because who knows when you will be the one in need of someoneelse’s blood.
Dr. Stroud wants students to know that there aren’t any side effects from donating blood, and the benefit it provides others is well worth it. National statistics indicate that 80%of donors are women.
