Imaginary Friends
“Imaginary friends” is a story written by Oscar Casares, he was only 8 years old and he and his parents lived inBrownsville in the year of1964. Oscar Casares talks about childhood memories and his family. When he was young he went to a private school, but time later his mother decided to change him to a publicschool because they couldn’t pay a private one. One day when his father took a route by the railroad tracks, Oscar Casares has a flash back about the same way that his mother took to take him to theschool, they has to pass almost all Brownsville to could arrive to the school. Oscar not going to a school closer because his mother preferred to go to a school where the teachers were certified, so theyhad to go through all Brownsville to can been on the school.
Oscar Casares thought about that because his father used to talk a lot about a man named Reynaldo Garza, but one day his father told himabout Mr. Garza. He told to Oscar that Mr. Garza was the first Mexican-American appointed to be a U.S. federal district judge. Also his father told him the story about how he met the judge. Mr. Casaresworked for the USDA and he helped the judge to get a permit to have a pony, but that wasn’t the last time that Mr. Garza talked about the judge and Oscar Casares still doubted about the relationshipof his father and the judge. After twenty years Casares kept hearing his father talk about the judge and one day his father went at the nursing home to see Judge Garza who was recovering frompneumonia. Oscar’s father was talking with Judge Garza about how proud he was that his son had written a book, and the Judge invited them to his house. Oscar did not understand now because the judge hadinvited to his house and he felt a little embarrassed because he believed that Judge Garza had only done as a gesture of thanks.
