Dental Eruption, Attrition, and Wear
Abstract:
Tooth wear is the result of three processes: abrasion (wear produced by interaction between teeth and other materials), attrition (wear throughtooth-tooth contact) and erosion (dissolution of hard tissue by acidic substances). A further process (abfraction) might potentiate wear by abrasion and/or erosion. Both clinical and experimentalobservations show that individual wear mechanisms rarely act alone but interact with each other. The most important interaction is the potentiation of abrasion by erosive damage to the dental hard tissues. Objectives:
To come to a full understanding of factors that cause dental wear.
To distinguish the difference between erosion, attrition , abrasion and abfraction.
To present preventive meassurements.Definitions:
Dental Erosion: ‘The loss of tooth tissue by a chemical process that does not involve bacteria, acids are most commonly involved in the dissolution process’.
Causes: Extrinsic, intrinsic (from within the body).
Dental Abrasion: ‘The abnormal wearing away of tooth tissue by a mechanical process’
Causes.
Dental Attrition: ‘The physiological wearing away of the tooth surface as aresult of tooth-to-tooth contact’.
Dental Attrition Scoring Methods.
Dental Abfraction.
Sensitivity:
Dentine Hypersensitivity
Clinical presentations
Consecuences and treatments
Preventivemeassurements
Conclusion
Mechanical action has affected the teeth of human populations living as hunter-gatherers, long before the advent of farming and the present. During that evolution, teeth haveevolved ways of taking advantage of the wear or compensating for it while still remaining functional. However, the frequent exposure to strong acids within our modern cultures has overwhelmed our oralenvironment.
