Every household should keep a survival kit with a flashlight, a radio, a first aid kit and enough food and water to last for a few days. Avoid placing heavyobjects in places where they could easily fall during an earthquake and cause injury or clock exits. Have a fire extinguisher. Familiarize yourself with thedesignated evacuation area in your neighborhood.
DURING AND AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE
Falling objects, toppling furniture and panic present the greatest dangers during anearthquake.try to protect yourself under a table or doorway. Do not run outside, and try to remain as calm as possible. If you are in the streets, try to findprotection from glass and other objects that may fall from surrounding buildings.
After a strong earthquake ,turn off ovens ,stove and the main gas valve .thenlisten to radio or television for news .In coastal areas beware of possible tidal waves(tsunami)while in mountainous areas beware of possible land slides
DAMAGEDNUCLEAR PLANTS
Two nuclear plants at the coast of Fukushima prefecture suffered damage from the earthquake and tsunami. Authorities have issued evacuationorders to people living within 20 kilometers of the first plant and within 10 kilometers of the second plant. Furthermore, people living within 30 kilometers of thefirst plant are asked not to remain indoors and close all windows.
No radiation dangerous to human health has been measured outside of the evacuation area.Prospective travelers to Japan should keep an eye on the quickly evolving matter, but avoid the sensationalist type of media as their source of information.
