I Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is reinforce the process of classifying reactions as either: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, or combustion. It will alsoteach as how to use the Vernier LabQuest computer and the stainless steel temperature probe.
II Procedures
* Part I: Aluminum and Copper (II) Chloride
1 Write out a skeleton equation forthe reaction of aluminium and copper(II) chloride.
2 Make a hypothesis of what you think will happen in the reaction listed above.
3 Obtain a 500ml beaker and place it on your lab table.
4Use a graduated cylinder to measure 140 ml of 1M copper(II) chloride solution and pour it into your 500ml beaker.
5 Add 140 ml of water to the 500 ml beaker. Your solution is now 0.5 M CuCl2 inconcentration.
6 Measure the temperature of the solution using the LabQuest and a stainless steel temperature probe.
7 Cut a piece of aluminium foil approximately 6”x 12”. Loosely roll the foilinto a cylinder that will fit into the beaker. Do not wad up the foil tightly into a ball, this will decrease the surface area of the aluminium and may slow down any reaction about to the place.
8Place the aluminium foil cylinder into the beaker; use a stirring rod to push it down completely into the solution. Note the temperature of the solution once again.
9 Save your beaker so that youmay compare this reaction to the next two reactions you will perform.
* Part II: Aluminum and Copper (II) Sulfate
1 Write out a skeleton equation for the reaction of copper(II) sulfate andaluminum, predicting the products of this reaction.
2 Use a graduated cylinder to measure 70 ml of CuSO4 and add this to a clean 500 ml beaker. Add 70 ml of water to the beaker as well. this willgive you a 0.5M solution of CuSo4.
3 Record the temperature of this solution using the LabQuest.
4 Add a piece of aluminium foil 6”x 12” to the cylinder, just as you did in part I.
