Nowadays, Death has begun a very important issue regarding children. Death is an inescapable fact of life; we all need to cope with it and so our children too. I strongly believethat schools and communities around the country should provide to their students and parents the right information about death. Schools are vital element of education in our lives. Education aboutdeath must be given at home by parents, but school takes an important role also, the more information, the best for our children. That is why I believe school should have more information about deathand dying, how to cope with the grief and the loss of a love one and the most important thing, how to move on and continue life with none or minimal traumatic experiences.
Talking about new policies atthe school district, first of all, we need to be cleared when we, as a school, can intervene with children that have experimented a lost of a love one. At the beginning of the year period of classes,the school provides information about courses that we are teaching in our school. That includes the normal courses and the ones that are for personal growing, such as self esteem and how to cope anddeal with traumatic experiences in life like divorce, dying and death.
School needs to have the authorization by parents or responsible of the child before the year begins. Before parents take adecision and sign the authorization, we provide a complete orientation about how our staff is going to handle and help children with those difficult experiences in life. We explain to parents how both,children and adults need extra support when someone in the family dies. We explain that our staff is formed by qualified personal. Psychologists with the right training and the most advanceinformation and techniques and tragedies in how to deal and cope with the grief and lost. We have one psychologist per every 10 kids.
