Toni Morrison was (and still is) a writer and editor. She was born Chloe Anthony Wofford on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio. Shewas the second oldest of four children born to Ramah and George Wofford. They never had much money, her father worked several jobs at once to support the big family.
Morrison was always a greatstudent, very smart and not fully aware of racial divisions until she was in her teens. When she was in first grade, nobody thought she was inferior. She was the only African American in the class andthe only one who could read. She was dedicated to school and her studies so she took Latin in school and read may great works of European literature. She graduated from Lorain High School with honorsin 1949.
Morrison continued pursuing her growing interest in literature at Howard University after she graduated from high school. She majored in English, and chose the classics for her minor.After graduating from Howard in 1953, she continued her education at Cornell University and completed her master’s degree in 1955. She then moved to Texas to teach English at Texas Southern University.Two years later, Morrison returned to Howard University to teach English. There she met Harold Morrison, an architect from Jamaica. The couple got married in 1958 and had their first son, HaroldJr., in 1961. After the birth of her son, Morrison joined a writers group that met on campus; this was where she began working on a short story with the group that turned out to be her first novel.Morrison decided to leave Howard University in 1963 to spend the summer traveling with her family in Europe, after that summer she returned to the United States with her son while her husband decidedto move back to Jamaica. At that time Morrison was pregnant with her second child, she moved back home to live with her family in Ohio before the birth of her son in 1964.
