Problem Set

1. A soft drink withproperties of 10 °C water is sucked through a 4 mm diameter, 0.25 m long straw at a rate of 4 cm3/s. Is the flow at the outlet of thestraw laminar? Is it fully developed? Explain.

2. Water flows in a constant diameter pipe with the following conditionsmeasured: At section (a) pa = 32.4 psi and za = 56.8 ft; at section (b) pb = 29.7 psi and zb = 68.2 ft. Is the flow from (a)to (b) or from (b) to (a)?

3. Glycerin at 20 °C (ρ = 1260 kg/m3; µ = 1.5 N-s/m2) flows upward in vertical 75-mmdiameterpipe with centerline velocity of 1.0 m/s. Determine the head loss and pressure drop in a 10-m length of the pipe. 4. A fluidflows through a horizontal 0.1-in-diameter pipe. When Reynolds number is 1500, the head loss over a 20-ft length of thepipe is 6.4 ft. Determine the fluid velocity. 5. Water at 20 °C flows through a horizontal 60-mm-diameter galvanized iron pipeat a rate of 0.02 m3/s. If the pressure drop is 135 kPa per 10 m of pipe, do you think this pipe is (a) a new pipe, (b) anold pipe with somewhat increased roughness due to aging, or (c) a very old pipe that is partially clogged by deposits?
