Why salsa have an Orisha taste?
This is a recurrent question that all we salsa´s lovers wonder us so often.
But first, I think is really important just to know what is Orisha? Who they are?
AnOrisha is a spirit or deity that reflect one of the manifestations of Olodumare (God) in the Yoruba spiritual or religious system. (Olodumare is also known by various other names including Olorun,Eledumare, Eleda and Olofin-Orun).
This religion has found it's way throughout the world and is now expressed in practices as varied as Candomblé, Lucumí/Santería, Shangó (also too Changó) in Trinidad,Anago and Oyotunji, as well as in some aspects of Umbanda, Winti, Obeah, Vodun and a host of others.
These varieties or spiritual lineages as they are called are practiced throughout areas of Nigeria,the Republic of Benin, Togo, Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Uruguay and Venezuela among others.
As interest inAfrica indigenous religions (Spiritual Systems) grows, Orisha communities and lineages can be found in parts of Europe and Asia as well. While estimates may vary, some scholars believe that therecould be more than 100 million adherents of this spiritual tradition worldwide. (This text is taken from Wikipedia)
But why salsa have this taste? Well, there are so many saints, but the stronger onesare Babalawos ( Orisha/Yoruba) It has the seven African powers.
The believer holds that within this group Orishas, are all aspects of human life. So for example:
Obatalá: Brings peace and harmonyElegguá: Open all doors and away the obstacles
Changó: King of religion, has power over enemies
Oggún: Iron, and owner employs the unemployed
Orunlá: Opens the present and the past
Yemayá: owner offertility
Oshún: Patron of gold marriages
