1. Introduction

In this academic assignment I am going to concentrate on Juliane House´s claim that the communicative and intercultural competenceis learnable. Furthermore I´ll show the important aspects Juliane House mentions in her essay like for example possibilities to practice the communicative and intercultural competence. This claim only refers to the differences between German and English. Her essay was published in 1996 in a magazine called “Zeitschrift für interkulturellen Fremdsprachenunterricht“.2. Short biography of Juliane House

Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Juliane House is professor for linguistics, with main emphasis on English and German. She studied in Heidelberg translationstudies with the language combination of English and Spanish. After finishing her studies she worked as a translator as well as a market researcher and was teaching German to foreigners. Sheemigrated to Canada to start on the University of Toronto her teachers training and to study on the Onatario institute for Studies in Education applied linguistics.
Later on she worked at the University of Bochum on a view research projects and successfully completed her pedagogic studies. At the University of Hamburg she is responsible for teaching linguistics with main emphasis on German as aforeign language and leads a part of the project “Covert Translation”. Juliane House´s areas of research are translation theories, contrastive pragmatics, discourse analysis, intercultural communication, misunderstandings in intercultural discourses and English as a “Lingua Franca”.

In Juliane House´s paper she compares first of all the intercultural competence to the communicative one. Afterwards she shows some empirical studies which could serve as a bases for the transmitting of communicative – intercultural competence and at last she explains how those elements canbe made usable for the foreign language teaching. This paper argues for a return to a broadly – conceived Hymisian communication (intercultural) competence.
Nowadays the whole world is talking about the “intercultural competence” and it just has taken the place of its predecessor the “communicative competence” as a new global aim for foreign language teaching.
25 years ago the communicativecompetence was defined by anthropologist and sociolinguist Dell Hymes as the speakers grammatical, psycholinguistical, sociocultural competence and furthermore the competence of using the language.
To explain intercultural and communicative competence Mrs. House refers to other linguists. For example in the case of the communicative competence she quotes Canale and Swain who claim that thecommunicative competence consists of:
1. Linguistic knowledge on gramma, which includes vocabulary, the ability to form correct sentences, to know the rules for word formation, pronounciation, spelling etc.
2. Sociolinguistical competence – how the speakers process different utterances in different situations and cultural contexts, how they interpret the information which are given.
3. Discoursecompetence – how the speakers while connecting in their minds grammatical forms with each other go on talking and understanding each other, so that a discourse can be created.
4. Strategic competence – means the control of the verbal and non – verbal communication strategies, which speakers use when the communication breaks off.
