Chronological CV

What is chronological CV?
A Chronological is a CV which lists your experience and education in order (starting at the latest) and contains details about each job you have done.
This type of CV is good if you have been in the same type of job throughout your working life and have no large gaps in your history. It can show how you have progressed through your career and howyou have gained experience and responsibility.
If, however, you have had several totally different types of jobs (e.g. working in an office, then a shop, then as a receptionist) or you have gaps in your employment (e.g. bringing up children, sickness or unemployment) these stand out in this type of CV and another type of CV would be better (see functional or targeted CVs).



How Is AChronological CV Laid Out?
When you write your employment history you list them starting with your most recent job, then the job before that, then the job before that, etc.
Remember to show when you worked there, what your job was and whom it was for. These should go on the first line of each description so that they are clear and can be read easily. Underneath this line you should describe what yourjob involved.
You should always try and write the most about your current/most recent job, as this will be the one that employers are most interested in - they will want to know more about what you have been doing in the last 12 months than what you were doing 10 years ago.
Education and qualifications should also be listed with the most recent first. You only need to give details of when andwhere you were educated and what your qualifications are.




How Should I Describe My Jobs?
Describing what you did in each of your jobs is important. Don’t just give a list of job functions (e.g. typing, photocopying, and answering the phone) – try and expand each bit to include more information (e.g. typing letters to customers and reports for the managers). Remember that you are tryingto show what you have to offer an employer and not writing a job description.
Although it can be good to say a little about what the company does, this only needs to be a short sentence as
anyone reading your CV is more interested in you than what the company does.
