Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosome cruzi (T. cruzi). It is found mainlyin Latin America, where it is mostly transmitted to humans by the feces of triatomine bugs, known as 'kissing bugs’, among other names, depending on the geographical area.
The bugs are found in housesmade from materials such as mud, adobe, straw, and palm thatch. During the day, the bugs hide in crevices in the walls and roofs. During the night, when the inhabitants are sleeping, the bugs emerge. They tend to feed on people’s faces because of the thin skin they find there, and this is why they are also known as “kissing bugs.” After they bite and ingest blood, they defecate on the person. Asa result, the person becomes infected through the bite.
People can also become infected by unknowingly touching their eyes (causing the typical “Romagna sign”), mouth, or open cuts after having comeinto contact with infective triatome bug feces, bugs directly depositing infected feces in their eyes, eating uncooked food contaminated with triatome bug feces, receiving infection from motherduring pregnancy or at birth or receiving an infected blood transfusion or organ transplant.

This iswhy we need to make time for house-call prevention programs, where people know what these bugs look like, the damage they cause, and where these tend to live inside their houses. One excellent exampleof this program takes place in primary schools of El Salvador, where children are constantly given coloring books containing the T.Dimediata and other disease-causing bugs. This helps children...
