Observation 4 – Emotional Development
Date of observation: 8th October 2012
Time observation started and finished: 1:05pm – 1:25pm
Number of children present: 8
Number of adults present: 3(2 plus observer)
Permission obtained: From parent and supervisor
Description of setting:
I carried out my observation in a rural playschool. It operates from 9:15am to 12:15pm and again from 1pmto 4pm Monday to Friday. The playschool caters for 10 children in the morning and has 8 children in the afternoon. It runs on the Síolta and Aistear programmes. The day is split up as follows,greeting time, circle time, work time, playtime, lunchtime and singing or reading time. There is an all- female staff and the adult ratio is 1 – 10. Outdoor play is actively encouraged and this is madepossible by the ratio of staff to children.
Immediate context:
I did my observation when TC arrived at school and during circle time. There were 8 children in total at the playschool and 3 adultsduring the observation. The children range from 3 to 4 and a half years of age

Brief description of child observed:
TC is a male aged four years. He started playschool in September and settledin very well. He has an older sister and one younger brother. He can be quite independent – he likes to hang up his coat and put the lunch boxes away however does seek help on occasion when doingcertain games by himself such as jig-saws
.
Aim of observation:
The aim of this observation is to observe TC‘s emotional development during arrival at school and during circle time.
Rational:
Aspart of my FETAC level 5 Child Development module I have been asked to observe children of different ages to access their development in the different areas of development. For the Emotionaldevelopment I have decided to observe a child ages 4 years.
