Drake's attack
The rivalry between Spain and England culminated in occupying Philip II, son of Charles I, the Spanish throne, and Elizabeth Tudor, the English. This rivalry originated in partin family matters rather than state. The divorce of Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, King Henry VIII of England caused a rift between the two nations. This break would laterreflected on the Spanish colonies. They believed the British to weaken the Spanish colonial empire weakened Spain. On the other hand, the British wanted to go based settling in the New World discoveredby Spain.
In 1586 the English pirate Francis Drake attacked Santo Domingo. To better defend Puerto Rico was necessary to strengthen the fortifications of San Juan and El Morro enlarge.
Two yearslater, in 1588, Philip II sent his invincible Armada to attack the British fleet in the Channel. The Armada was there almost totally destroyed by a storm and enemy action. Arguably this crushingdefeat marked the beginning of Spanish decline. Emboldened by this victory the British decided to attack more violently the Spanish possessions. In 1595, Francis Drake attacked the island of Puerto Rico.He was accompanied on this trip which would not return alive - the equally redoubtable John Hawkins. Both had left England, bound for America in September of that same year. The fleet consisted oftraveling 26 ships, 1,500 sailors and about 3,000 men landing. Upon reaching the Canary Islands were rejected. On November 8 came to Dominica.
That day had Don Pedro Tello de Guzmán, captain of aSpanish squadron, two ships belonging to the squad of Francis Drake. He managed to catch one and left the pursuit of the other to spot the enemy squad. The Spanish fleet returned to San Juan EL13November. His mission was to transport to Spain two million gold and silver that had brought Sancho Pardo de Tierra Firme. That treasure is stored in the fort from the month of April. As was aware of the...
