Overview of the City of San Antonio
San Antonio, the seventh largest city in the nation, is located in the American Southwest and south central part of Texas. Being only 140miles away from the Gulf of Mexico, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation with a population of 1.3 million people. The strength of the city’s economic structure is its diversity, which is as varied as San Antonio’s cultural makeup. While traditionally known for its tourism/convention business and large military presence, San Antonio has shed its two-dimensional label and today hasmultiple industries driving its economy. This has resulted in the greater San Antonio are having one of the most robust economies in the country. The city’s growth industries include:

- Hospitality & Entertainment

- Manufacturing
- Telecommunications- Transportation & Logistics
Despite the national economic downturn, the unemployment rate in San Antonio was at seven percent for April 2011. Moreover, according to the Texas Workforce Commission, there are about 998, 087 people in the workforce for the metropolitan statistical area, working in more than a dozen employment sectors. Furthermore, because of San Antonio’s strategic locationand excellent infrastructure, more than 50% of the total imports and exports between the U.S. and Mexico pass through San Antonio before reaching their final destination.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, the racial composition of the city of San Antonio is 72.6% white, 6.9% African American, 0.9% American Indian and Alaska Native, 2.4% Asian and 63.2% Hispanic or Latino. Moreover, the percentage of foreign born persons from 2006 to 2010 was 13.7%. Onthe other hand, the number of households from 2006 to 2010 was 461, 139. In terms of wages, the median household income for 2006-2010 was $43,152.00 and people that lived below the poverty level accounted for 18.9% of the total population in the past 2 years.

In 2010, San Antonio had a per capita personal income (PCPI) of $34, 969.00. This type of measurement ranked the Cityof San Antonio in the 192nd place in the United States. Similarly on the national level, the PCPI of the City of San Antonio accounted for 88% of the national average. Moreover in terms of total personal income (TPI), San Antonio was ranked 29th in the United States with a TPI of $75, 320,349.00 in 2010.
