LOS ROQUES ARCHIPELAGO
Location:
In the Caribbean Sea, between 11 ° 58 '36 "and 11 ° 44'26" northlatitude and 66 ° 57 '26 "and 66 ° 36'25" west longitude. The archipelago is part of the FederalDependencies of Venezuela and is about 130 km from the mainland. Los Roques is part of the Lesser Antilles and the Leeward Islands.
Review:
It is estimated that human presence inLos Roques is back at the end of the first millennium AD. According to recent archaeological studies, the archipelago was a frequent destination of Indian sailors from Lake Valencia and the centralcoast of Venezuela,who came to perform rituals and festivals to collect botutos, fishing, turtle hunting and extraction desalination plants. Later, during thecolonial era, it was often an influx ofpeople attracted to the beads, salt and mangle. Smugglers and pirates used its intricate coastlineas a hideout.
