The goal to pursue a career in the field of education has been a part of me for almost all ofmy life. My very first volunteer service that I did was at the age of eight. Both of my parents were taking English as a second language classes and they were allowed to take their children withthem. I remember the first time that the teacher asked me if I wanted to help a couple who had just arrived from Mexico by going over their vocabulary words. I felt a bit shy but with my parents’encouragement and the couple’s acceptance of my help, I agreed. I believe that the love for helping others, the love for teaching and the desire to make this my career was born at this time. Anothervolunteer opportunity that changed my life was in a community center in Oakland, California. This center was born out of dire need to save the teenagers from the violence and addictions that they wereliving in. It was not professional at all, just caring parents and community leaders getting together to do something about the kids. I was put in charge of a group of teenagers who got together totalk about any trial or tribulation they were facing. It was amazing to see that all these kids needed was someone to listen to them with a caring ear and heart. I knew at this time that I wanted towork as a high school teacher because these were the adults who most impacted the kids I worked with for better or for worse. I loved the fact that they were excited for me to know that I would becomea teacher and they have been my inspiration to this day. I came to realize that contrary to what many think, the parents of many of the students who were struggling in school did want to help theirchildren, they just did not know how.
