Drug cartels in Mexico have been in business long time ago, drug cartels started as early as in the 60’s and 70’s. A lot of these drug cartels started by ex-soldiers who served U.S. and Mexico. So many are ex marines, military, seals, and some are criminals made into bigger criminals. Many of these soldiers preferred to work for criminal drug lords for protection. Sincethe pay was better than other jobs, they went to the easy and dangerous job. Even though violence among drug cartels had been occurring long before the war began in Mexico, the government held a generally passive stance that changed on December 11, 2006, when President Felipe Calderon sent troops to Michoacan to fight the cartel La Familia.
Although drug cartels are all over Mexico, there areeight drug cartels in Mexico, each of them fighting for territory. Due to the competitiveness between drug cartels, drug wars have been occurring throughout Mexico and expanded to other countries, especially the U.S . As a consequence, mortality rates have gone up drastically, and violence and crimes have increased in the last few years. Other outcomes include human trafficking, arms trafficking,money laundering, corruption, as well as a decline in tourism. The problems arising from drug trafficking are very serious. It’s causing destruction of families, many ending in death. The Drug war has gone out of the Mexican and president’s hand. It has become a global war now, which seems to not reach an end.
Accordingly, one of the most powerful drug cartels in Mexico is The Gulf Carte (ElCartel del Golfo). Much of its power came from Los Zetas, a cartel formed by ex-marines, solders, seals and criminals. In 2006, these two groups split and the Gulf Cartel had a big fall on their drug business. Los Zetas became a new Cartel, and they became the dominant force. As a result El Cartel del Golfo, in collaboration with La Familia and El Cartel de Sinaloa, that are the two otherenemies of Los Zetas known as La Familia and The Sinaloa Cartel, formed the new Federation. Today the two most powerful drug cartels are El cartel de Sinaloa and El cartel de Juarez. Hunger for more power, wealth and territory have caused a drug war in Mexico.
The drug war went out of control for Mexico’s Government and President. The cartel Los Zetas has been blamed for massacres in the lastyear, for example the Tamaulipas and Guatemala massacre. According to the Prospect Magazine, “The Zetas have been blamed for two recent mass killings in Mexico. Last month over 180 bodies were found in mass graves, and 72 migrants were massacred last summer in the state of Tamaulipas, which is close to the Texan border” (Collins). This criminal incidents illustrate that the drug war has expandedbeyond of the government’s hands. The Cartel of Los Zetas has gone across southern countries, causing horror and violence across borders. As a result of all this violence,this has caused Drug cartels to go to war with each other, and end with many innocent lives.
Due to the desire of more power by both cartels, the battle has been taken to the streets of all Mexico, and innocent bystanders have been caught in the cross fire, causing the destructions of families and their homes. According to Prospect Magazine “The drug war has cost some 40,000 lives in Mexicoitself” (Collins).Year by year, the number of deaths has increased in large amounts. Ciudad Juarez has been one of the major battle-fields for all the drug cartels. As a result in Ciudad Juarez there are 11 people killed every day. For this reason it’s known as Murder City the second most dangerous city to live in.
