Mechanizing Computations
In 1917, in France, Blaise Pascal devised his Machine Arithmetigue which had a tremendous effect on the world of mathematics.
Pascal was 19 years old when he developedthis first mechanical adding machine which he called the numerical wheel calculator.
With the machine, which is also referred to the Pascaline, additions and subtractions were performed mechanicallyinstead of laboriously. Arithmetigue could also count.
It was the first adding machine could perform all these operations. It used gear driver counting wheels to add. The audiometers in cars today workmuch the same way. Even though he lined before the industrial revolution, Pascal’s design was so reliable that it was used for virtually all adding machines until electronic calculation made themobsolete. In Pascal’s day, the major problem with this machine was that he was the only person who could repair the machine when they broke down. This severely limited the number of machines he couldproduce and sell. Business owner of that time considered Pascal’s machine to be too complex to be practical.
Since multiplications and divisions were difficult to do with Pascal’s machine Arithmetigue, got fried Liebniz modified the design so that multiplication and division could be performed directly.
Liebniz’s Stepped Reckoner was completed in 1973 and was a great stride forward in thedevelopment of automatic calculations. The Stepped Reckoner turned a complex arithmetic operation into a series of simpler operations. For example, multiplication was done by automatically performing a seriesof additions.
The principle is used in modern computer systems. As a philosopher and mathematician in Germany, Liebniz knew that his machine was ideally suited for calculating tables of commonmathematical functions. Such tables represented a lifetime of work in the seventeenth century. There was quite a demand for the Stepped Reckoner.
