Lesson 1: Classifying Matter
Define:
* Matter: Anything that has mass and volume.
* Mass: The amount of matter in a object.
* Volume: Is the amount of spacesomething takes up.
* Atom: Small article that is a building block of matter.
* Element: Substance that consist of just one type of atom.
* Compound: Substance containing atoms of two or moredifferent elements chemically bonded together.
* Mixture: Matter that can vary in composition.
* Heterogeneous mixture: Mixture in which the individual substances are not evenly mixed and canbe seen by naked eye. (colloids and suspensions)
* Homogeneous mixture: Mixture in which the individual substances are evenly mixed and cannot be seen by naked eye. (solution)
Lesson 2: PhysicalProperties
Define:
* Physical Property: A characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure changing the identity of the matter.
* Solid: Matter that has a definite shape and adefinite volume.
* Liquid: Matter with a definite volume but no definite shape.
* Gas: Matter that has no definite volume and no definite shape.
Size dependent:
* Length
* Height
* WidthSize independent:
* Melting Point: Temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to liquid.
* Boiling Point: Temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to gas.
*Density: Is the mass per unit volume of a substance.
* Freezing: Occurs when the particles are moving so slowly that attractive forces between the particles hold them tightly together.
* Color* Shade
* Conductivity: Is the ability of matter to conduct an electric current.
* Solubility: Is the ability of one substance to dissolve in another.
Separating Mixtures:
* Filtering* Decanting
* Distillation
* Magnetism
* Malleability
* Ductivity
Lesson 3: Physical Changes
Thermal energy dependent:
1. Changes in state of matter:
* Increasing heat:...
