Planning Guide User Information Unit 5: Good Citizens Part 1: Good Citizens in our Community Unit Overview Good Citizens – This unit introduces students to good citizens in the community. Students also use voting to make some decisions in the classroom. The unit is divided into two parts. • Part 1 looks at good citizens. •Part 2 looks at voting and decision making. Part 1: Good Citizens in our Community starts here. TEKS/SEs (district clarifications/elaborations in italics) SS.K.02B Identify contributions of patriots and good citizens who have shaped the community. SS.K.14A Obtain information about a topic using a variety of valid oral sources such as conversations, interviews, and music.  English LanguageProficiency Standards • ELPS C.1c Use strategic learning techniques such as concept mapping, drawing, memorizing, comparing, contrasting, and reviewing to acquire basic and gradelevel vocabulary. College and Career Readiness Standards • CCRS 1.C3 Explain and analyze the importance of civic engagement. Academic Vocabulary • patriot • good citizen • community Essential Understandings / Guiding Questions •People can make a community better. 1. Who helps us around our school? 2. Who are some important helpers in our neighborhood? 3. How can we make the school better? Assessment Connections • Use student products from the Cues, Questions, and Advance Organizers activities to facilitate a student discussion about Guiding Question #3. Help students make the cognitive leap from what adult public officialsand schools helpers do for their larger communities to what it is possible kindergarten students to do to improve the classroom community. Use the teacher guide, Guided Discussion, to help shape this assessment. Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS): End-of-year assessment in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for all students coded as LEP (ELL) and for students whoare LEP but have parental denials for Language Support Programming (coded WH). For the Writing TELPAS, teachers provide five writing samples – one narrative about a past event, two academic (from science, social studies, or mathematics), and two others. Instructional Considerations Prerequisites / Background Knowledge for Students Students practiced contributing to their classroom community inPre-K. This will likely be their first discussion of the important role of good citizens in their neighborhood and the wider community of our city. • CCRS 4.B3 Gather, organize, and display the results of data and research. • ELPS C.2g Understand the general meaning, main points, and important details of spoken language ranging from situations in which topics, language, and contexts are familiar tounfamiliar. Instructional Considerations Background Knowledge for Teacher This is the time to discuss all the people who make the community better. Use the examples of historical figures (and patriots – people who love their country) such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen F. Austinto help students realize and understand that a community (a group of people who live in the same area) benefits when ordinary citizens take leadership roles because of a particular need in the community. Help students understand that the crossing guards, parent helpers, cafeteria workers, and custodians who work to make their school a good place to learn are just as much heroes as those people...
