Why were the Indians associated with beautiful music throughout the movie, when in
one of the beginning scenes, one of them forcefully breaks Father Gabriel's flute?

If we analyze the scene wherethe flute was broke by the Guarani’s leader we notice that Father Gabriel and the flute are in the center of the Guaraní’s . This was the heads up that he (as a Jesuit) is in the middle of theGuarani’s and the Catholic church/ political issue. You can also tell by the picture that the Guarani’s pay close attention to the music and just about when the song reaches its climax the Guarani’s leaderbreaks it. As if trying to break or get away from what is about to happen which is the “civilizing” the guranis by the Jesuits. The curious thing about the breaking of the flute is that it was doneat the climax of the song just as the Guarani’s were to be completely enchanted by the song yet the enchantment is not broken and has completed its purpose which was to establish trust. This trust isshown when another member tries to fix the flute after it is broken. The breaking of the flute at the climax of the song also foreshadows what is to happen to the guaranis. Because it is a symbol thatat the climax of their “civilizing” something will break which was the end of their community.
The beautiful music represents the progress of the “civilization” of the Guarani’s. Further down in themovie not only is there a flute playing but also singing and violins playing and the learning of playing each instrument which represents the progress of the civilization. At the last scene we see aviolin floating all by itself which to me seems as if it was the only thing left between the guarinis and the catholic/ political dispute. Then we see it is lifted up but the little guranis girl andis taken by her which leads me to believe music is not why they are “civilized” it is there ability able to pick up anything and adapt to it and how they are fully capable of learning other cultures...
