Originally formed in London in 1971 and topping charts throughout the 70’s and 80’s, who else could represent British music in the 70’s other than Queen?

In the 1970s and 1980s the British rock group Queen scored an impressive number of hits. Freddie Mercury (vocals, keyboard), Brian May (guitar), John Deacon (bass) and Roger Taylor left their mark upon popular music. Queen still remains oneof the most beloved rock bands of all-time, even after the tragic death of Freddy Mercury. The four members of Queen from the year 1970 right through until Freddie's death in 1991 produced over 18 albums (live and recorded), and endless singles, most of which are timeless rock anthems.

SHORT BIO
The beginnings of Queen can be traced to 1968, when Brian May  and Roger Taylor  formed the trioSmile, at Imperial College , London , where they were both students. After the group's bassist  and lead singer Tim Staffell  left them. May and Taylor took on vocalist Freddie Mercury  in April  1970 to form Queen. In 1971 John Deacon  completed the lineup as bass guitarist.
In 1973, Trident and EMI signed a contract for a recording deal for Queen, and released their first album “Queen”. Theband was offered a big break - their first major tour as support band to Mott the Hoople. It was said by many people during that tour that “Queen was more than a support act”
But the major turning points for Queen were Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera, which featured Bohemian Rhapsody. The widespread popularity and acclaim helped boost the band to international fame.

THEIR MUSICThe band turned their focus onto more commercial sounding music but with an emphasis on style and creativity. Queen ultimately became the definition of rock super-stardom by delivering drama and precision through their music and on stage presence.
Able to fuse epic rock and metal with huge operatic multi-layered guitars and vocals, and in many cases the camp and the kitsch, Queen's music waseclectic and alluring, drawing inspiration from a wide berth of influences. On stage, fronted by Freddie with his dynamic, theatrical performances, Queen wowed audiences across the world
Queen never seemed to take themselves seriously, and a lot of their songs contain in-jokes and veiled lyrics. 'Delilah' (Innuendo, 1991) is actually a song dedicated by Freddie to his cat. Freddie is also quotedas claiming not to know what Bohemian Rhapsody is about, offering instead the explanation that it was whatever people wanted it to be.
Queen have been cited as a major influence on the "neo-classical metal" genre. In the early 70s, Queen helped spur the heavy metal genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence;  the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in addition, they fused the musicgenre with a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed.

Mercury'sDeath and Resurgence of Popularity

By November 23rd, 1991, Mercury could no longer deny the rumors about his health. A day after confirming to the public that he was suffering from AIDS, he died of bronchial pneumonia. The band regained prominence soon after with the re-release of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and with that track’s memorable inclusion in the 1992 film, “Wayne’s World.”

The Name
Originally called Smile, singer Freddie Mercury came up with the new name for the band, later saying:
"Years ago I thought up the name 'Queen'… It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid…It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay...
