Comparative essay of Gorda and Flaca Review
The novel Soledad by Angie Cruz is a novel in which the main character Soledad struggles throughlife. In this novel, Angie Cruz gives Soledad a rival and an aunt that helps her through difficult times. These secondary characters are: Flaca that is somewhat her rival and Gorda is the aunt thatdotes her and is always there to give her advice. These characters give somewhat of an interesting detail in the novel that makes the reader want to continue reading, either are the conflicts between themor Flacas experiences. There’s a feud between Flaca and Gorda because Gorda wants that Flaca be more like Soledad.
Flaca is a young girl that had a difficult childhood growing up. Since she andGorda were abandoned by her father Raful. Her way of thinking is very street like, with no manners. She dislikes the fact that he mother compares her to Soledad. And from there come the hate toSoledad. She thinks Soledad as this good girl that doesn’t do anything exiting in life. Flaca prefers her aunt Olivia to her mother Gorda. Olivia it’s more like a mother figure and a friend that she can beopen to. And she also likes the fact that Olivia doesn’t believe in Santeria (Witchcraft) like her mother Gorda. Flaca only believes in love and hate.
Gorda, on the other hand believes in Santeria(Witchcraft). She does everything according o the spirits. Gorda is Olivia’s sister. But a feud happened between the two of them and became separated. The feud was because she thought that Olivia wastaking away her daughter by tending to her. When Gorda had her baby, she had gotten depressed and it affected her daughter also. Every time Gorda started crying the baby also started crying. So whileGorda dealt with the situation, Olivia was taking care of Flaca.
