Villa de LeyvaLa Villa de Nuestra Señora de Santa María de Leyva fue fundada el 12 de junio de 1572 en el Valle de Zaquencipá al occidente del Departamento de Boyacá, por el corregidor Hernán Suárez de Villalobos en representación delprimer presidente del Nuevo Reino de Granada don Andrés Díaz Venero de Leyva.El Valle de Zaquencipá era parte del territorio ancestral de los Muiscas, nación indígena de lengua Chibcha, para quienes los ríos y en particular las lagunas eran sitios sagrados, cuyas almas o espíritus acuáticos protegían a sus gentes. Según la mitología Muisca, el origen de la humanidad se da precisamente en Iguaque, unalaguna de origen glacial cercana al municipio, de la cual salió Bachué, una hermosa mujer que traía de la mano un niño con quien tuvo descendencia y pobló la tierra.
