Mahatma Gandhi, also called Bapu, which means father in the Hindu culture,failed in raising up his children. Harilal Gandhi, his eldest son is the most critical example of Gandhi´s lack of commitment to his family. Harilal Gandhi, tried desperately along his life to find outhis own identity, he was not able to leave under his father´s expectations and he took the wrong way. He renounced all family ties in 1911 and embarked upon a tragic, lifelong path ofself-destruction. (´´The people’s Almanac´´, 2007). Gandhi was against formal education, he though that receiving this Western styled education was not helpful in the struggle against British rule over India,(Wikipedia, 2007) so despite he studied to be a barrister, he denied his sons the right to study and to grow as professionals. As a consequence, all this disciplines and rules that Gandhi imposed to hischildren created little fissures between he and his children. "You want my sons to be holy men before they are men!" Gandhi's wife once exclaimed (´´The people’s Almanac´´, 2007). It is clear then thatthis exceptional man, was not perfect at all, trying to push too hard to his children to follow his same ideals for India. But he forgot how important it is to support one’s decisions and goals....
