EXPORTING YOUR VIDEO USING FINAL CUT PRO

There are number of ways to export a video from Final Cut Pro (FCP) and achieve a well-compressed, rescaled H.264-format video that is ready for upload to the VMIX platform. This document will discuss settings and processes that will help you save time and allow multiple tasks on the same computer. Themethod discussed is also cost effective because it requires no additional software (other than tools that ship with Final Cut Pro, versions 5 and higher). Identifying Your Final Cut Pro Version It is good know which version of FCP you are using. To do this, launch FCP and click the Final Cut Pro menu (to the top-left of the screen) > About Final Cut Pro. The FCP splash screen appears, showing theversion number:

This document provides instructions for using Final Cut Pro 6.0.3. However, the instructions apply to versions of Final Cut Pro 5 or later with QuickTime Pro. Click the splash screen to close it.

Checking Sequence Settings One of the most common mistakes made in FCP (especially Version 6 due to the fact that it supportsmultiple formats and frame rates on the same timeline), is forgetting to double check that the sequence you are working on has the correct settings for your source footage. In the example used in this document, we will be working with standard definition NTSC DV, so we need to check that the sequence is set accordingly. To do this, click Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings. The Summary tab of theAudio/Video Settings dialog should display the following settings:

Note: If you are working with standard definition NTSC DV and your settings do not match, please refer to your FCP documentation to set them correctly.

Preparing for Export from Final Cut Pro After you have imported your footage, made any required editsand have the final cut, you are ready to export your completed video for processing in QuickTime Pro. It is recommended that you do not export an H.264 format directly from FCP’s timeline, because doing so will suspend any other items processing until FCP has finished transcoding your video. This can mean a long wait time, depending on your file size. For this reason, we suggest exporting your finalvideo in native format for encoding outside of FCP. Exporting native format is faster and it allows you to work on other projects in FCP while your files are encoding in QuickTime Pro. Additionally, using this technique allows you to keep adding files for encoding without disrupting the current encode. Exporting Your Video from Final Cut Pro To export your video, complete the following steps: 1.Set the In and Out points on your timeline for the selected duration of the clip you want to export. 2. Click File > Export > QuickTime Movie. The Save dialog appears.

3. In the Save As field, enter a name for your video. 4. Navigate through your directory structure to select a location to save the file.

5. Leave theSettings, Include and Markers fields set as shown in the image above and check the Make Movie Self-Contained option. This ensures that the video file is independent of your project files in case you want to move the video file to another computer without having to move all of the associated project assets. 6. Click Save to begin exporting. FCP will display a progress bar.
