CHAPTER 1: Is it the ghost?
The Managers of the Paris Opera were retiring because they couldn’t stand the phantom anymore, so they weregiving a last performance. Meanwhile, six girls of the ballet were laughing in the dressing room of La Sorelli, while she was trying to practice her speech. All of a sudden Jammes shouted it was the ghost, and locked the door. Sorelli asked her if she had seen him, and all the girls said they had. They said he was dressed in fine clothes and saw him go through the wall.
This ghost spoke to nobodyand as soon he was seen, he disappeared. Joseph Buquet said he had the face of death, he was thin, wore a coat, his eyes were two black holes and he had no nose.
When Jammes shouted, they heard somebody outside the door, but Meg Giry didn’t want her to open it. However, Sorelli opened it and looked into the passage, which was empty. She didn’t believe that the girls had seen him, but they sworethey had. Jammes said Gabriel had seen him once behind the Persian.
Meg interrupted them and said that her mother thought Buquet had to be quiet, because the ghost hates to be talked about. She told her secret but made the girls promise they wouldn’t tell anyone. She said it was because of box five. The ghost ordered not to sell it because he wanted it for him.
Suddenly, there was a sound offootsteps. It was Jammes’ mother calling for her. She entered the dressing room and told the girls Buquet was dead. He had been found hanging in the third cellar. No one knew how he died, but Moncharmin wrote a book called “A manager’s memories” which described what happened:
He said he was in the manager’s office when Mercier came in. He told him the body of a man had been found hanging under thestage, but when Moncharmin went down the stairs Buquet wasn’t there. He had disappeared. He found an explanation: as it was after the ballet and the girls were superstitious, they destroyed the rope to avoid bad luck.
Sorelli was about to give her speech when she came across Count Chagny, who was going upstairs. She congratulated her and Christine Daaé. Meg Giry told him they wanted to ask aboutBuquet and begged him not to tell the old managers about it.
At the performance, Christine was the best though she sang in place of La Carlotta. Therefore people wanted to know why she only sang when La Carlotta was sick.
Count Chagny was standing up in his box clapping and next to him was his brother Raoul. Their parents had died when Raoul was young so he was brought up by his brother, andthen joined the navy. He had just come back from a trip; and before his next journey to the North Pole, the Count wanted him to see Paris. That’s why he was at the Opera.
When Christine ended her performance she fainted and Raoul went to see her. She was in her dressing room with a doctor and asked Raoul who he was. He told her he had gone into the sea to rescue her scarf a long time ago and shebegan to laugh. He wanted to tell her something in private, but she refused because she didn’t feel well. Then, she asked everyone to leave.
Raoul thought it was because she wanted to be left alone for him, so he went to her door. But before he could knock he heard a man’s voice saying: “Christine, you must love me!” He also heard Christine telling him how he could talk like that, when she...
