Frankenstein, the Creature.
Considered as the first science fiction novel ever written, Frankenstein was created by Mary Shelley (1797 – 1851), at the age of 19 in the Romanticism era. MaryShelley; the wife of one of the most famous poets of that time, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and friend of Lord Byron and William Polidori achieved immortality with the story of a scientific obsessed with ideas ofeternal and creation of life such as the the elixir of eternal life. Frankenstein has a lot of topics to choose like loneliness; (perhaps the clearest), alchemy, human emotions, pity and many othersbut this brief essay will focus only in The Creature’s eloquence and its ability to speak and persuade.
Having been created and after being locked in Frankenstein’s lab in Ingolstadt. The creatureescapes to a small village where it is hit by the villagers. However, he manages to run and then to live in secrecy in an old cottage of a house in the upper part. Here is where “The creature” learnshow to speak some French words and how to name the members of the family and most important; it starts to know the human emotions by seeing that family which is for him the most precious thingscreatures in the world.
“Cannot describe the delight I felt when I learned the ideas appropriated to each of these sounds and was able to pronounce them”
After having acquired the ability to speak “Thecreature” now faces its maker and tells the story of how it was rejected by the people who thought were the only that could accept him. Because of this Victor exclaims these words:
“I wasmoved. I shuddered when I thought of the possible consequences of my consent, but I felt that there was some justice in his argument. His tale and the feelings he now expressed proved him to be a creatureof fine sensations, and did I not as his maker owe him all the portion of happiness that it was in my power to bestow? He saw my change of feeling and continued”
