1. Frankenstein has many elements of a horror story. What strategies and devices does Mary Shelley use to make the story scary?
Foreshadowing. Words like “omen” and “fate” refer to Victor’s tragicfuture.
Tone. By combining horror and romance, as in gothic fiction, the author wrote something that could be both appealing and horrifying depending on the reader. Nowadays stories with similarelements and themes like the Twilight series are wildly popular, dealing with the allure of forbidden, anti-heroes, the touch of evil, conquest of death, and its irresistability.

Science Fiction. Frankenstein was one of the first literary works to be considered part of the science-fiction genre. Thischaracteristic might have been especially frightening for the abomination it represented in the time of the novel’s publication.
