Gabriel García Márquez
Gabriel was born on March 6, 1927 in the town of Aracataca, Magdalena, Colombia. His parents were Gabriel Eligio García and Luisa Santiaga Márquez. He was brought up by hisgrandparents, but at the age of 8 his grandfather died. He had a close relationship with his grandfather. He told Gabriel a lot of histories and inspired him to be somebody in the literature. He wasalso very inspired by his parents, for example, his worldwide recognized book “Love in the times of cholera” was inspired by the love story of his parents. When he finished the school, he began tostudy laws in the national university of Colombia, but he gave up to became a journalist in 1948. As a journalist, he made many of his important books, like “The story of a shipwrecked sailor”. In 1958 hemarried Mercedes Barcha and they had two sons. They are Rodrigo and Gonzalo. Gabriel said always that Mercedes is the love of his live. During the dictatorship of Laureano Gomez and Gustavo RojasPinilla in the decades of 60 and 70, he decided to make a voluntary exile in Mexico and Spain. He did it, because he had a close relationship to left governments, like the one in Cuba. He still has agood relationship with Fidel Castro. He stayed in Mexico and recently, he lives in Mexico City.
The career of Gabriel García Márquez is very successful. He began to write in 1955 with only 28 years.His first book was “Leaf storm”. After it, he wrote another 40 books. The most important are “The story of a shipwrecked sailor”, “Autumn of the patriarch”, “Chronicle of a death foretold”, “Love inthe times of cholera” and his top book “One hundred years of solitude”. With the last one he won the Nobel Prize in 1982. He won many other prizes. He is also very recognized, because of his especialway to write, because he combines the reality with the magic and fictitious.
