George herbert
As you can see in the picture, I’m going to speak about George Herbert: H-E-R-B-E-R-T.
He was an English poet, orator and Anglican priest. Hebert was born in Montgomery, Wales, onApril 3, 1593, the fifth son of Richard and Magdalen Herbert. He lived until March 1, 1633.
After his father’s death when he was only 3 years old, he and his 6 brothers and 3 sisters grew up underthe watchful eye of his mother, patron of Jonh Donne who dedicated his “Holy Sonnets” to her.
Herbert was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, in Cambridge, where he excelled inlanguages and music. He went to college with the intention of become a priest. He achieved degrees with distinction.
Herbert was part of the Seventeenth-Century Metaphysical School of poetry. The leadingmetaphysical poet was Jonh Donne, who is considered the founder of this school of poets. When Donne dismissed from his post of member of the Parliament, he was helped by friends like Lady MagdalenHerbert, George Herbert's mother, who played a prominent role in Donne's literary life.
Herbert was a follower of John Donne.
Another author we should name is Henry Vaughan, a poet within the sameschool of Herbert. He wrote in Mounts of Olives (1652) about Herbert as a glorious saint and seer. He was inspired by Herbert’s religious poetry. Henry Vaughan shares Herbert's preoccupation with therelationship between humanity and God. Vaughan made no secret of his indebtedness to Herbert for literary and spiritual guidance. Herbert's poems were published under the title The Temple, and Vaughanentitled his volume Steps to The Temple.
METAPHYSICAL STYLE
-Although is no sense a school or movement proper, they share common characteristics of wit, inventiveness, and a love of elaboratestylistic manoeuvres.
