William Beech is a boy 8 years old which lives in Deptford, a town in London and because of the war; he has to be evacuated from his parents to the countryside to be protected of bombs. He is evacuated to a little village called Little Weirwold. There he meets Mr Tom, a grumpy man which has to take care of him during the war. Willie is very shy with Mr Tom and he doesn’t eat very much because hismother, who treats him very badly, didn’t give him lots to eat. One day, Willie was in the graveyard and a dog appeared. He was very scared because he had never seen one so he got a spade and when he was going to hit him, Mr Tom appeared and stopped him and told him that the dog was his dog, Sammy. Mr Tom didn’t know Willie’s mother treated him badly until one day he saw Willie’s bruises andmarks of violence in his back. After that he realised the reason why his mother had put a belt in Willie’s suitcase. So Mr Tom got the belt and buried it. The first days, Willie wet every day the sheets of the bed because he was scared and nervous of being in strange house. One day, Mr Tom decided to take Willie to school and at6 first he went to his friend’s class but Mrs Hartridge moved him into thebaby’s class because he didn’t know how to right or read and the other ones did. So Mr Tom decided to make him a big birthday party with all his friends. One day when Willie arrived to the house, he found all his friends and Mr Tom and a birthday cake for him. He was very excited and happy. Everyone had bought him a present and he was really pleased with them because he had never received apresent from anyone. After all this and the fact that Mr Tom had taught him how to write and read so he could go to his friend’s class, Willie became more confident and more comfortable with Mr Tom and Mr Tom the same with him. When they were in the best moment of their relationship, a postcard from his mother arrived and said that she was very ill and Willie had to return until she got better. So thenext day, Willie took a train to Deptford, where he lived. When he arrived, he saw his mother and went towards her. At first, she didn’t realise that the boy who was beside her was her son Willie because he had changed a lot and was fatter and healthier. After a few seconds thinking, she finally realised that he was Willie. Willie offered to take the suitcase but she was very ungrateful and shedidn’t allow him to do it. As the postcard said that Willie’s mother was ill, Willie asked her how she felt. But she was really good looking, she wasn’t ill at all. After that moment of tension, they went to their old poor house. When they entered, his mother told Willie that she had a present for him. It was in a box, it was a baby, a girl. His mother told him that she was the real reason why shegot him to come back. Willie tried to get her out of the uncomfortable box but his mother stopped him. They sat down in a table and started to talk about his life in Little Weirwold. At first, all went very good and calm because Willie was talking only about Mr Tom and that he was going to the church every Sunday etc, but the situation changed when Willie talked her about Zach and that he wasJewish and the situation got even worse when Willie’s mother thought that all the presents he had has been stolen by him. Willie tried to convince her that they were presents from his friends in Little Weirwold, but she thought that he was lying to her therefore she got Willie and introduced him and the baby in a cupboard and locked it. In Little Weirwold, Mr Tom was very worried because there nevercame any news about Willie and he didn’t return, so Mr Tom decided to go to Deptford and visit Willie. The next day he got a train from Little Weirwold to Deptford. When he arrived, he asked for Mrs Beech house and one woman indicated him to the place. When he arrived there, he found the police, that area had been destroyed by the bombs. Sammy went quickly downstairs and started to bark at a door....
