Green way

A pipeline that will cross the island will be built by the Power Authority. The pipeline will supply natural gas for the main electricity generation plants inthe country. The pipes will extend for 91 miles and the construction will be completed by late 2011. This project that will move this energetic program will becalled Greenway and the total cost is about $350 millions dollars.

The target of the pipeline is to reduce the dependency that the country has with the oiland replace it with the natural gas. The Puerto Rican consumers will have a economy of $1, ooo million annually in their energy bills. The governor of PuertoRico emphasize that the pipeline is secure and that the pipes will pass the most far away from the communities and will be installed to four feet deep. It is asafe fuel, whose use is increasing in all the world and in the U.S., are more than 300 thousand miles of natural gas and in recent years there is not been asingle death related with the pipeline.
The governor is holding meetings with the mayors of the areas that the pipeline will be passing and informing them about theproject. Some of the mayors such as Arecibo, Peñuelas and Adjuntas next to the Puerto Rican people don’t accept the pipeline because of the serious damage thatwill cause to the environment.
The specialist in the field has proven that there are risks and an environmental danger if in Puerto Rico happens an earthquakeof big proportions or a tsunami. If occurs an accident, we do not have a sophisticated system of medical emergencies for responding an emergency of that type.
