INTRODUCTION

Halloween has a prominent place in the American calendar. Each year on October 31, many people carve pumpkins, attendHalloween parties and take children trick-or-treating. From October 31 to November 2, Mexicans celebrate El Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. El Dia de los Muertos is a time for families to honor their ancestors, who are said to return in spirit to visit their families. Although Halloween and El Dia de los Muertos occur around the same time of year and share similar characteristics, theyalso contrast in various ways.

“HALLOWEEN VS DIA DE LOS MUERTOS”

According to "The Pagan Book of Halloween", Halloween has its origins in the Celtic New Year's festival of Samhain, which occurred on November 1. Samhain marked the end of summer and was a time when spirits walked the earth. Author Nicolas Rogers says that some scholars emphasize the origins of El Dia de los Muertos inpre-Columbian Mesoamerican traditions of worship of and sacrifice to the dead. Rogers says that both Halloween and El Dia de los Muertos demonstrate a fusion of pre-Christian and Christian beliefs. They share an historical connection to the Christian commemoration of the dead on All Saints' Day, November 1, and All Souls' Day, November 2.

Halloween brings to mind images of skeletons, devils and ghosts.According by Ronald L. Grimes, the skeleton is an iconographic image that appears in both Halloween and El Dia de los Muertos traditions. Although Halloween skeletons are scary images, El Dia de los Muertos skeletons, or calacas, are depicted as humorous and mocking. Halloween rarely involves much reflection on or celebration of death. In contrast, El Dia de los Muertos is both a reflective and ajoyous occasion when families tell stories about the dead and celebrate life and death.

In "Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night," author Nicholas Rogers says that Halloween and El Dia de los Muertos both have begging traditions. In America, children dress up in costumes and trick or treat, or go door to door on Halloween asking neighbors for treats. In Mexico, children parade throughthe streets holding cardboard boxes with candles inside. The children ask passersby for money. Although costumes are a part of Halloween, on El Dia de los Muertos, only some revelers dress up in costumes and attend bars and discos in Mexico City and other cities.

CONCLUSIONS

According to "Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night" by Nicholas Rogers, the focus on family differs betweenHalloween and El Dia de los Muertos. Halloween is not as family-centered as other holidays, such as Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving. One family-centered tradition may be trick-or-treating, when parents escort children around neighborhoods. El Dia de los Muertos, on the other hand, is a more family-centered holiday. Mexican families commemorate the dead by setting up altars for the deceased thatinclude ofrendas, or offerings of food and drink. Families also visit cemeteries to clean up gravestones and leave flowers, candles and foods for their deceased relatives.
