Summary of Sontag
A picture is worth a thousand words. The photographs published of the torture thatIraqis prisoners suffered by Americans soldiers reveal the humiliation and dehumanization to which they are subjected. The most incredible thing is that are thesame soldiers who take the photographs and send them. This is a way to have fun and they enjoy with the humiliation and suffering of other human being. Theimages were not only seen as fun for the soldiers, also to other Americans who feel no compassion for the Iraqis.
The photographs show brutal acts, as image ofnaked men tied up, soldiers inflicting pain to prisoners, mostly in the genital and Iraqis being forced to practice sexual acts; are just some of the torture towhich prisoners are subjected. The worst thing about it is that those who commit these atrocities feel no remorse because they see the Iraqis as inferiorpeople; as well many Americans see them as terrorists and murderers. Many of those prisoners have committed no crime, but to be in the wrong moment and place they arearrested and become victims of this torture.
The U.S. government has tried to justify the situation by arguing that what Americans soldiers made to Iraqisdid not reach the end of torture, but rather were abused. But the image which is what really count shows that it was torture. In this digitalized world thephotographs will never disappear and the images can be viewed and remembered by everyone, while all words used to justify acts of torture will be forgotten with time.
