Chapter 5
NEARLY QUARTER PAST ELEVEN.
I haven’t seen a fox here, but I have heard owls. I don’t know how a bird can survive all this. I’ve seen larks inno-man’s-land. I always find hope in that.

Charlie and I ate our breakfast in silence hoping the inevitable storm wouldn’t break. There was a knock on the door and Mother knew at once it wasn’tMolly. It was the Colonel. He was furious that Charlie had stolen from him and wanted Bertha back. Mother calmly took a coin from the money jug and gave it to the Colonel. He took it and told us thatwas fair but Charlie was no longer in his employ. Then he left.
We whopped for joy and Big Joe sang Oranges and Lemons when Mother said “You do know you’ve just lost your job, Charlie?” He said hedidn’t care, the Colonel could stuff his job, he would get a new one. He went to fetch Bertha where he had hidden her in the woods and from then on Big Joe and her were inseparable.
The only thing wasthat Molly had stopped coming over. Charlie went to their cottage but time after time got sent away. Her parents didn’t think we were fit folk for Molly to visit. Eventually, because he thought I hada better chance, Charlie set me to see her. He gave me a letter to give to her.
I met her in secret and from then on I met her always in secret, giving letters to and from Charlie and Molly. Shealways asked after Charlie and I felt a bit jealous but i got to see her and he didn’t. She’ d tell me news of the big house and one day she told me the whole house was talking about war with Germany.She didn’t really know what it was about but she had read it in the newspaper she gave to the Colonel every day so she knew it was true. French and Germany were very angry with each other. T hey weregathering armies and if they did fight we’d be in it soon to fight on the French side against the Germans.
After I left school I went to work with Charlie on Mr Cox’ farm. It was nice to be working...
