HONOR VALUE AND THE DUELLO
Honor: In this comedy honor is revealed as the primary reason for many of the actions taken by several different characters. The play is an accurate depiction of the honorcode and the different standards for men and women of the time in regards to honor code and the different standards for men and women of the time in regards to honor and chastity.
For women honorrefers to their virginity and sexual faithfulleness. Losing the honor by having sexual relations before marriage meant the loose of all social standing. The loss of honor was a form of annihilation.For men the meaning of the words was rather different, they could lose it if they didn’t maintain it or if gentlemen’s good name became stains.
Honor in war: Men’s reputation was inextricably linkedwith their personal courage in geats of arms. Displaying and maintaining reputation for valor, whether it was on the battlefield of in private quarrels, was the basis of the masculine concept of honor.Braves and cowards: Unlike women, men could defend their honor and that of his family, by fighting at war. Courage and strength were important for middle age man. The fact of winning a battle gavethem prestige among the other gentlemen. Men that lost battles lost their honour, and those who didn’t even participated, were considered cowards and everybody knew who they were.
Importance of theprince in war: The prince should have his authority because of his prowess in battle. Leadership was measured with the capability nobles had of showing their bravery at war.
Honor Challenged: beloved:fighting for her, defending her honor. Personal: death before dishonor. Family: equal social standing meant same values and behavioral patterns. Friends: acted through a second.
The duel: the onlysocially acceptable ambition was to gain noble rank by winning the favor of their sovereign. Competition was fierce only a few were capable of attaining this ambition. Dueling provided each...
