IBM and its relationships
“Why is IBMstill alive and thriving after so long, in an industry characterised perhaps more than any other by innovation and change?” Thats what many people ask, including the business historians, perhaps becausethere have been a lot of crisis.In IBM there are some few points that have kept alive IBM and a well structured company that we have to know to undertand this.
This business started with tabulatingmachines; before being called IBM it was called Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR) in 1911, when the technology became the core of IBM’s busines . After that it was renamed what we know nowas IBM, which stands for International Business Machines, in 1924.
When this change began, there was a lot of changes also done to the company: it established a very good sales force, and afterthat a service organization. This helped customers to make the best use of IBM products and also get valuable information about what customer need.
San Palmisano, who suceded Mr Gerstner in IBM havea few points to kept IBM. The first point we need to have in mind, its that IBM aim was to mantain relation with its customers. “It often “co-creates” products with customers”, says Bridget vanKralingen, the firm’s general manager for North America. This means a lot for the company because its products are for the customers, and when this relation happens, customers will get satisfied.
Thesecond point that we need to have in mind is that IBM became “much less hierarchical and more open”. Its said that there are online sessions where employees and sometines family members give a brainstormand give ideas. This is also very important because now, like this point says “IBM is more open” and with this relation it can increase a lot.
