Although Jamaica is an independent country, the U.S. exerts economic ascendency over most of the goods produced there since it gained independence in 1962. Jamaica hasnot been allowed to export many products due to the many restrictions imposed by the U.S. As a result, Jamaica relies heavily on U.S imported goods. Today finance U.S., hegemony over Jamaica isreflected in areas such as agriculture and finance. Jamaica is forced to depend on imported agricultural products from the U.S. due to the fact that agricultural progress in Jamaica is oftencountered by cheaper by cheaper imported products from the U.S. As good example of this is, Jamaica’s strong and abundant milk industry which no longer exist s due the introduction of low costpowdered milk. Similar cases have ultimately created a milieu of economical crisis and government dependence on loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF’s stringent prescription foreconomic growth, which included massive cuts in public spending and sizeable currency devaluation, caused undue suffering among the lower classes and hurt Jamaica’s economy. This creates anever-ending debt cycle that Jamaica can never settle. The island also has limited exportation opportunity due to current IMF/WB policy. The crux of their exploding and controlling it is a strategyby not only U.S. to circumscribe Jamaica to import and not export, which then benefits the U.S. because it makes Jamaica a “frequent’’, even though an obligated buyer. The only ones that do notseem to object that do not seem to object to this unjust treatment are the coterie of rich upper- class professionals and entrepreneurs that form the oligarchy of the U.S. enterprises inJamaica. In conclusion, not only U.S. is doing to Jamaica is an example of modern day imperialism, that circumvents any possible ways of importing or exporting and Jamaica being free and independent.
