HISTORY
To 1816Se believed that the first Native Americans in the region that now comprises the state of Indiana were the Mound Builders (Mound Builders), but eventually disappear from theregion. The first European explorers who reached the region in 1679, they found Native Americans of the Miami tribe. Later, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, would be installed (and would leave) other tribes of Indiana, including Delaware, Mahican, Munsee and the Shawnee, who came from this (had emigrated after losing their land in favor of the white settlers) and the Kickapoo, thePiankshaw, the Wea and Potawatomi and Huron tribes, from the north. The Potawatomi were the last Native Americans to settle in the region, around 1795. All these native tribes were forced to sell or lease all their land by white settlers who had settled in the region, and had to migrate westward. When the Potawatomi were forced out of Indiana, in 1838, few Native Americans remained in Indiana.

Thefirst European explorer to explore the current Indiana was the Frenchman Rene Robert Cavelier de La Salle, who explored part of the St. Joseph and Kankakee rivers. New Cavelier explore the region north of the present Indiana in 1680. In 1682, annexed the whole region around the Great Lakes (along with the Mississippi River basin) to the French crown.

The French were interested in populating theregion little as they wanted to establish trading posts for barter trade with local Native Americans (primarily for their fur). In 1732, the French founded the first permanent settlement of Indiana, Vincennes. However, the British started to compete with the French for control of this trade from the early eighteenth century. At first, Native Americans made their commercial exchanges with theFrench, but gradually started to opt for the British, who paid more for their skins, including firearms.
