Mysterious condition attacks kids
Pauline, 13, has been struck by the dreaded nodding disease. HShe has forgotten what he usedto be like before the attack of the diseases. It seems as she is a whole new person. Pauline, like more than 3,000 other children in Northern Uganda, has been struckby the mysterious syndrome that has doctors and scientists puzzled and has shattered lives in this rural community. Nodding disease gets its name from the strangenodding-like symptoms that children display in the first stages of a seizure, but doctors say this only a first simple symptom to a more brutish and painful serious ofevents. They struggle to perform simple tasks such as eating. This new diseases basically robs children of their future. The kids with the diseases carry out tasks that theynormally don’t do, such as running to the bushes or start fires for no reasons. 200 ties have been made to the strange causes this children do. This disease came toattention to Uganda by the time of 2009! CDC has conducted field investigations and extensive lab work, says Dowell. •Doctors are using drugs for controlling epilepsywith some limited success. But they say it only slows the progression of symptoms, rather than stops them. •It is unclear how many fatalities have been caused by thedisease itself, but its victims are left unable to function in any meaningful sense and profoundly dependent on others for care. •Uganda's health ministry says they aredoing enough. They say they have switched to a more effective epilepsy drug and they are training local health workers to deal with the disease. Bibliografia:
