In 1957, Dr. Martin Luther King was elected President of Southern Christian Conference, an organization formed to support the civil rights movement. He had taken theideals for this organization from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi.
Between 1957 and 1968, Kings travelled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearingwherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles.
In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught theattention of the entire world, and inspired his manifestó of the Black revolution.
Moreover, he directed the peacebul marcho in Washington, D.C., of 250.000 people to whom he delivered his address, ‘IHave a Dream’.
Paradoxically, he was arrested over twenty times and was awarded five honorary degrees. He has become not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure. At theage of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the your gest man who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
On the evening of April 4, 1968, while he was standing on the balcony of his motel room inMemphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march, he was assassinated.
